An Author's Note: The Uncomfortable Truth About Our Playgrounds
As an instructor looking out over the glaciers here in Tignes, I have to be brutally honest: our industry is a massive part of the climate problem.
We sell the dream of pristine nature, but the machinery required to deliver a modern ski holiday is intensely destructive. Think about the sheer volume of resources we burn through. We rely on diesel-guzzling snowcats to groom millions of acres every single night. We drain local reservoirs and consume staggering amounts of electricity to blast artificial snow from cannons just to guarantee holidaymakers a white Christmas.
And that’s before anyone even arrives. The vast majority of a ski resort's carbon footprint—often up to 70%—comes from tourists flying and driving to the mountains.
It feels hypocritical, doesn't it? We stand in the lift line wearing our 73% recycled Rossignol skis, waiting to ride a steel chairlift powered by a grid that might still rely on fossil fuels, having just flown across a continent to get here. For years, I’ve debated with fellow instructors in the locker room about whether we are simply curating the slow death of our own livelihood. The Bigger Picture: A Reason for Global Hope
But here is where the skepticism gives way to actual, data-backed hope. While the micro-level footprint of ski resorts is problematic, the macro-level global trends are finally turning a corner.
We aren't just relying on ski manufacturers to save the world. According to the International Energy Agency's 2026 data, the rapid deployment of clean energy technologies—specifically solar PV, wind power, nuclear power, and electric vehicles—is actively displacing fossil fuels on a massive scale. In fact, these technologies avoided roughly 3 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions globally in 2025 alone, which equals about 8% of all global energy-related emissions.
Even more encouraging, global methane emissions—one of the most potent drivers of near-term warming—are finally being targeted with precision, and massive clean power expansions in countries like China and India are effectively offsetting older, dirtier energy grids.
