The Expedition Philosophy
True adventure lies in the spaces between lines on a map. Our expeditions are designed to take small, dedicated groups of skiers into environments untouched by commercial tourism. This is not about manicured slopes or mechanical lift queues, it is about discovering local cultures, navigating untouched powder, and learning the high-level decision-making required in the deep backcountry.
Every expedition is guided and coached by Terry Walker. We limit group sizes and structure itineraries to focus on individual progression and experiences. You will not only ski pristine snow; but if you want, you can develop skills in route finding, terrain analysis, wilderness safety, and self-sufficiency.

Explore the Balkan peaks near Popova Shapka. Combine high-volume cat-skiing with short skins to access untouched bowls, open glades, and remote summits along the Kosovo border.
Tour the Kaçkar Mountains or Mount Ararat. Discover ancient, hospitable villages, skin over high volcanic cols, and descend huge slopes in a country where ski tracks are an absolute rarity.
Ski the deep powder. Stay in remote yurts, rustic wooden cabins, or 5 star hotels. Skinning through pine valleys and high peaks of the Caucasus range, famous for its legendary snowfall.
Hokkaido and Honshu backcountry. Explore perfect birch glades in the deepest, lightest powder on earth. End each day resting in natural, steaming geothermal onsens and enjoying local cuisine.
The ultimate frontier, with dog-sledding. Navigate vast plateau camps, fly into remote ranges, ski giant faces, and manage mobile logistics in camper vans along the stunning Kenai Peninsula and Chugach Range.
Meet Your Expedition Leader: Terry Walker
Running worldwide expeditions on skis since 2016 is not just a job for me, it's my life's passion. I specialise in designing and leading complex trips into remote areas where backup is far away and safety margins must be absolute.
Beyond my BASI Level 4 (ISTD) ski qualifications, I am a fully certified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI), as well as an official trainer and assessor of both Ski Instructors, Mountain Leaders and climbing instructors. This training ensures that terrain awareness, high-altitude logistics, avalanche safety, and safety protocols are second nature.
I have spent years managing unique expedition challenges: being towed behind skidoos or local horses, sailing and docking boats in Norwegian fjords, setting up camps in freezing environments, sleeping in remote yurts, and managing transport logistics in developing regions. In these wild places, safety relies on thorough snowpack analysis, strict group management, and robust planning.
"Expeditions are about thorough preparation, local connections, and understanding risk. We go deep into the wilderness, but we do so with complete control and planning. Then we ski the powder."
High-Alpine Wilderness Preparation & Risk Mitigation
Venturing into remote mountain ranges, whether touring the arctic couloirs of Norway's Lofoten Islands, exploring volcanic backcountry in Iceland, or skinning deep into the Vanoise wilderness, requires an entirely different level of risk management than resort-based skiing. True expedition leadership is rooted in meticulous logistical planning, satellite communication redundancy, and rigorous avalanche safety protocols.
Physical & Mental Readiness
Multi-day backcountry expeditions require sustained cardiovascular endurance and the muscular resilience to ski variable snow while carrying a 35L to 40L pack. Prior altitude acclimatization and a positive, team-oriented mentality are just as important as technical skiing ability.
Satellite SOS & Evacuation
When operating outside cellular network coverage, we maintain continuous satellite communication via Garmin inReach devices. Every expedition party carries emergency shelter bivvy bags, comprehensive trauma medical kits, and pre-coordinated evacuation coordinates with regional mountain rescue services.
Low Guide-to-Client Ratios
We strictly limit expedition team sizes to a 1:4 or maximum 1:6 instructor-to-client ratio. On complex international itineraries, we coordinate with local high-altitude expedition specialists to combine indigenous snowpack knowledge with Terry Walker's British leadership.
Essential Equipment Checklist for Multi-Day Ski Expeditions
📍 Skis, Bindings & Skins
We recommend skis between 95mm and 112mm underfoot with tech pin bindings or reliable hybrid touring bindings. Bring custom-cut climbing skins (mohair blend) if you wish to explore remote areas.
📍 Mandatory Safety Gear & Airbag
Every participant must carry a modern digital avalanche transceiver, metal shovel, 240cm+ probe, ski crampons (*couteaux*), and a backpack (electronic or canister airbags, can also be welcome).
📍 Extreme Weather Layering
In addition to standard Gore-Tex shells, pack a heavy-duty down belay jacket for summit transitions and emergency stops, extra wind-resistant mittens, merino wool glove liners, and two pairs of UV Category 4 sunglasses plus low-light goggles. Depending on your needs.
📍 Navigation & Hydration
An insulated 1.5L thermos bottle (standard water bladders freeze in pack hoses at altitude), headlamp with spare lithium batteries, and personal blister/first-aid essentials are examples of extras that help.
Foire Aux Questions — Guided Ski Expeditions
Everything you need to know about physical fitness, insurance requirements, expedition equipment, client-to-guide ratios, and booking international ski trips.
What level of skiing fitness is required for a ski expedition?
You should be a confident off-piste skier comfortable in variable natural snow conditions (wind crust, heavy spring powder, steep couloirs, and dense tree skiing) and capable of continuous skinning for **2 to 5 hours daily** with a backpack.
A solid baseline of cardiovascular fitness helps your personal safety and team enjoyment. We strongly recommend beginning an aerobic conditioning program (running, cycling, or stair climbing with a loaded pack) at least 8 to 12 weeks before departure.
What specialized equipment do I need to bring on a multi-day expedition?
A comprehensive expedition packing list will be emailed upon registration. Core mandatory items include:
- Dedicated touring skis (95–115mm underfoot) with pin or hybrid bindings and maybe two pairs of climbing skins.
- Digital avalanche beacon, metal shovel, 240cm+ probe, and ski crampons (*couteaux*).
- High-insulation down belay jacket, Gore-Tex shell, merino base layers, and Category 4 glacier sunglasses.
We can assist in coordinating specialist equipment rentals or airbag backpack canisters prior to departure.
What is the client-to-guide ratio on White Soul ski expeditions?
We maintain strictly low ratios, typically **1:4 up to a maximum of 1:6**, depending on the remoteness and technical severity of the destination.
Small team sizes allow for agile decision-making, cohesive pacing, and maximum powder tracking. On complex international expeditions, we frequently coordinate with local mountain guide specialists alongside Terry Walker.
Is specialized high-altitude travel insurance mandatory?
Yes, absolutely mandatory. Standard holiday travel insurance policies can exclude off-piste ski touring, glacier travel, and remote helicopter evacuation.
You must hold a specialized mountaineering/ski-touring policy, such as policies from the **British Mountaineering Council (BMC Alpine Trekking/Skiing)**, Austrian Alpine Club, or Global Rescue, that covers backcountry search and rescue, helicopter medical evacuation, and repatriation without altitude limits.
How do we handle emergency communication and rescue in remote wilderness areas?
In a variety of possible ways, such as in remote destinations outside mobile network coverage, our leadership team carries **Garmin inReach satellite messengers** and GPS beacons capable of transmitting emergency SOS signals directly to international rescue dispatchers.
We comprehensive group sometimes carry emergency trauma kits, bivouac shelters, and might register our daily route plans with local rescue authorities before leaving the camps.
What happens if weather conditions prevent us from reaching our planned objectives?
In the mountains, nature dictates the schedule. If high avalanche danger, whiteout storms, or extreme winds prevent us from skiing high-altitude peaks, our guiding team immediately pivots to safe, secondary itineraries.
Whether skiing sheltered treeline powder, exploring lower alpine valleys, or conducting deep-dive avalanche rescue and crevasse rescue workshops, we ensure your trip remains active, rewarding, and educational.
Can an intermediate off-piste skier join a ski expedition?
Certain introductory expeditions (such as hut-to-hut touring in the Vanoise or gentle ski touring in Arctic Norway) are suitable for strong intermediate off-piste skiers who have good fitness and basic skinning experience.
However, technical couloir or high-altitude glacial expeditions require advanced freeride skiing ability. We conduct a thorough pre-trip consultation to ensure the expedition matches your technical profile.
When should I book flights and travel for a scheduled expedition?
Please **do not book international flights** until we explicitly confirm in writing that the expedition has reached the minimum number of participants required to run.
Once confirmed, we provide detailed logistical guidance on recommended arrival airports, transfer timetables, and pre-trip hotel rendezvous points.
